Apple Cracking Down On Repairs

Written By   Eric Woodard, CISSP
March 9, 2016 What the Tech?

iPhone Broken - AppleThe latest software for Apple iPhone 6 handhelds are responsible for the infamous “error 53“, which renders a device useless if tripped.

The error occurs when the system detects any unauthorized repairs, meaning that you could only have iPhones repaired by official Apple staff.

Needless to say this has not been met with a lot of excitement from consumers.

The issue only seems to arise once devices are updated to the latest operating system, iOS 9.

The internet, and in particular Apple’s discussion forums, is charged with both anger and frustration as many users now face the loss of all their personal data stored on the device. Including: photos, documents, contacts, etc.

The Guardian reported on the experiences of a freelance photographer, Antonio Olmos, who says the problem occurred shortly after he installed the latest operating system.

“When Olmos, who says he has spent thousands of pounds on Apple products over the years, took it to an Apple store in London, staff told him there was nothing they could do, and that his phone was now junk,” the report notes.

Across the discussion forums people are desperate for a solution to restore their devices, with comments ranging from:

“I did get the front screen replaced, and I understand that it’s now considered “tampered with”, but at least let me use my iPhone on the old IOS system… I can’t retrieve old photos or important documents I once had.”

to,

“With this update I’m unable to use the phone, and still have to pay for the phone itself.

Apple maintains that this is to insure security for their users, which would not be unreasonable considering the ability to store credit cards and other information on the devices.

Apple has Advised users facing difficulties to contact Apple Support.
