Samsung’s Folding Smartphone is Here
A new wave of pocket technology might be upon us, with this great news out of Korea. According to the Korean news site ETNews, Samsung will start mass producing the “smartlet” this year; for a 2017 release.
This smartlet as it is called, is the product of a drunken night between a tablet and a smartphone. This new folding smartphone that unfolds into a 7in tablet is Samsung’s best bet to take back the smartphone market.
The device features a bendable OLED screen capable of folding completely in half. You could think of it much like a book, and you wouldn’t be too far off.
How Does the Thing Work!?
The OLED (or organic light-emitting diode) allows the device to fold; where a traditional LED display would shatter. The OLED provides a brighter display, are super thin and use far less battery power to their counterparts.
This development is taking place as the smartphone market is plateauing, as smartphones become increasingly accessible and standardized there is not much room for improvement. Samsung Asserts that they have noticed the trend over the past 3 years, and hopes the smartlet will open the floodgates for a wave of ne smartphone technologies.
In a call with investors in January, director of Samsung’s display division Lee Chang-hoon said
“Development of Foldable OLED is taking place according to our plan … We are planning on mass-production and release this product by discussing with our partners.”
While this does reference a foldable display, it does not confirm a foldable smartphone. Though ETNews does claim to have spoken to a source familiar with the device.
While there is still no official name for the device excitement is abuzz, and we for one are crossing our fingers that Samsung is onto something.
