Solarcity Utilizing Tesla’s Tech

Solarcity, the company recently purchased by Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors, just announced their next project —- a roof made entirely of solar panels.

The “Solar Roof” was revealed by SolarCity chairman, Elon Musk, saying that these will not only look better but last longer than traditional roofs.

SolarCity seems to be tapping into a much larger market than solar panels themselves, allowing them to capitalize on new building initiatives and homeowners seeking to completely re-roof their homes.

The solar roof concept will integrate with Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors technology seamlessly, with the addition of the Tesla backup battery pack to SolarCity’s package. Allowing homes to become truly self-sufficient, this underscores Musk’s vision of affordable solar energy to middle class households.

These kinds of innovations are the kinds of seamless integration between two companies that actually fulfills a need in the market. This could not only reverse the declining panel installations that SolarCity has been plagued with, but increase share of the market by tapping into the housing market.

Recognizing that there are over 5 million roof replacements in the US alone every year, “There is a huge market segment that is currently inaccessible to SolarCity,” Musk noted.

The products official release will be introduced in the coming months in sync with other products designed for residential solar usage and storage.
